NORTHERN CAPE

Speak of Kimberley, the capital of the northern Cape, and it immediately conjures up thoughts of the early diamond industry in the country with its thousands of prospectors looking to make their fortunes. Perhaps the most well known landmark of that era is Kimberley's 'Big Hole', that vast man made hole put there by those early diamond diggers. There's more however to the Northern Cape than just Kimberley. For outdoor adventure, visit the remote but superb Kalahari Gemsbok Park where the remaining Bushmen of South Africa still live and which semi-desert terrain supports numerous animals such as reptiles, cheetahs, antelopes and the rare black-maned lion. The Augrabies National Park with its waterfalls (fifth largest in the world) and the unspoiled Richtersveld National Park, provide ample hiking possibilities and gorgeous sceneries. Another delight to the eyes is the vast semi desert of Namaqualand, which in the spring is carpeted with wild flowers displaying their scintillating colors under the sun.
